So you need to figure out the year of production for your Fender guitar or bass. You’re not alone. Fenders rank as the most frequently bought and sold instruments on Reverb , and finding a precise date of manufacture can be key to determining the value and specifics of an instrument. The most important thing to keep in mind when dating a Fender is the highly modular nature of the designs. Like Henry Ford, part of Leo Fender’s genius was in optimizing the company’s production efficiency. His guitars were built en masse by an entire factory, not a single luthier toiling over one instrument at a time. Features like bolt-on necks and pickups wired into the pickguard all helped the Fender factory churn out guitar after guitar, day after day. This also means that various parts used on a particular guitar may have come from different points in time, so no single number can absolutely define when the instrument was built. Instead, the best approach to dating a Fender is to combine indicators from the design of the instrument, the dates found on the neck and body, along with the serial number. Once you have the information you need, if you’re interested in selling your Fender, you can use Reverb to get it in front of the largest audience of musicians in the world by clicking on this link.

hi, I have a hard time dating my guitar: It is a black Maple neck Made in Japan Fender Squier series Sn: N Logically, it should’ve been.
Squier is a musical instrument brand name owned by the Fender Musical Instruments Corporation. Fender, under the ownership of CBS , acquired the Squier brand name in when it bought a USA based string making firm, but it lay dormant for many years . Before the Fender Squier series were introduced in , Fender was making lower priced guitars such as the Fender Lead series at their Fullerton California plant.
Until the introduction of the Fender Squier series, Fender had never produced lower priced guitars based on their main Stratocaster and Telecaster designs and had always used different model designs for their lower priced guitars. In the late s and early s Fender was facing competition from lower priced Japanese made guitars.
The lower priced Fender guitars were made in America and could not compete with the lower prices of Japanese made Fender copies. In the early s, Japanese labor and production costs were much lower than in America and to compete with the Japanese made guitars, Fender moved the lower priced Fender guitar production from America to Japan. Fender began negotiations with several Japanese musical instrument distributors and reached an agreement with Yamano Gakki and Kanda Shokai to establish Fender Japan.
Yamano Gakki are also known for once being part of Epiphone Japan. Kanda Shokai own the Greco brand name and one of the conditions of the Fender Japan agreement was that Kanda Shokai cease production of its own Greco Fender copies. This arrangement benefited Fender because it removed the Greco Fender copies from the Japanese market which were selling in Japan at much lower prices than the American made Fenders and it also benefited Kanda Shokai because Kanda Shokai could then distribute Japanese made Fender branded guitars in Japan.
Further negotiations between Fender and Japanese guitar factories were done.

A note on identification. Occasionally a Japanese model will sneak in, too. Models produced by Fender Japan, regardless of how you feel about them, are less valuable than the US versions, with bodies made from basswood as opposed to the traditional alder of the US versions and generally worse scallop jobs. Up close you can often see quickie, machine-style scallops in their fretboards; a shallower cut that does not reach all the way from one fret to the next, but rather creates a small trench in the wood between flat, unscalloped ledges.
Fender US Malmsteen necks have a more detailed, hand-finished look to them, with each scallop rounded out individually from fret wire to fret wire; no flat ledges. The original 88 version is quite distant from what Yngwie plays today, with its little round neck, thin vintage frets, two-point trem etc. However, what bugged me about it was the way truss rod adjustments could only be made at the heel.
That meant removing the neck for every adjustment.
